Breast Cancer: The Facts

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer expected to develop in a woman’s lifetime. With roughly 1 in 8 women developing breast cancer, the odds that everyone is affected by this disease in some way are very high.

In the UAE, the incidence of cancer among young women is rising year on year and currently near 45% of new breast cancer cases are in the 20–49-year-old age group. Despite that, the rate of participation of women in breast cancer screening remains as low as 15%.

On the occasion of the International Breast Cancer Awareness month, it is imperative to remind all women to go in for screening and get checked.

  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Breast cancer accounts for nearly 40% of cancers that affect women in the UAE.
  • Early detection of breast cancer increases the 5-year survival rate to 99%.
  • About 85% of breast cancer diagnoses happen in women with no family history of breast cancer.
